Kailash Chandra Shorthand Volume 1: Week by Week Study Plan

10 weeks

Volume 1 plan

A structured path from early dictation to 55-60 WPM readiness.

40-60 WPM

Foundation range

Volume 1 is best used for clean outlines and early speed.

Daily

Dictation method

Use audio dictation, not passive reading.

Kailash Chandra shorthand books are among the most widely used English shorthand dictation resources for SSC Steno aspirants in India. Almost every serious student owns Volume 1, but many do not know how to use it correctly.

Most students open the book, read a few passages, feel overwhelmed, and then repeat the same exercises without measurable speed progress. Volume 1 should not be treated like a reading book. It should be treated like a graded dictation tool.

What is Kailash Chandra Shorthand Volume 1?

Kailash Chandra shorthand volumes contain graded English dictation passages designed for Indian competitive exam preparation. Volume 1 is the foundation volume, useful for students moving from theory to real-time dictation.

  • Volume 1: beginner to intermediate, around 40-60 WPM.
  • Volume 2: intermediate speed building, around 60-80 WPM.
  • Volume 3: exam-level passages, around 80-100 WPM.
  • Volume 4 and 5: advanced and high-speed practice.

The Biggest Mistake Students Make

The most common mistake is using Volume 1 as a reading exercise instead of a speed-building tool. Reading outlines slowly does not build dictation speed. Real speed grows only when you listen and write in real time.

  • Do not read the passage before first dictation.
  • Use recorded audio or a dictation partner.
  • Write without stopping during dictation.
  • Read back immediately after writing.
  • Mark weak outlines and repeat them deliberately.

Week 1 to Week 2: Build Dictation Comfort

Start with Passage Set 1 at 30-35 WPM. Your goal is not high speed yet. Your goal is to write complete sentences under time pressure while keeping outlines readable.

In Week 2, repeat familiar passages at 40 WPM and note which outlines break under pressure. Drill only those weak outlines for 10-15 minutes daily.

Week 3 to Week 5: Stabilize 40-45 WPM

Push Passage Sets 2, 3, 4 and 5 toward 40-45 WPM. Begin timing your transcription. You should be able to transcribe 400-500 words within a controlled time window.

  • Track date, passage, WPM and errors in a notebook.
  • Use common phrases like I am, we are, it is, for the and in the.
  • Repeat older passages at a higher speed to measure growth.
  • Never skip read-back practice.

Week 6 to Week 8: Move Toward 50-55 WPM

At this stage, some outlines will become automatic. Identify the outlines that are still slow and create a personal weak-outline list.

Do one full 10-minute mock dictation at 50 WPM in Week 7. This prepares your hand and mind for the SSC Steno skill test format.

Week 9 to Week 10: Review and Transition

By Week 10, revisit passages from across Volume 1 at your current best speed. Compare your Week 1 writing with your Week 10 writing. The improvement will show whether your foundation is ready.

Once you can write Volume 1 passages at 55-60 WPM with reasonable accuracy, start Volume 2. Do not try to perfect Volume 1 at 80 WPM. That is not its purpose.

Daily Practice Time by Student Type

Student with flexible time45-60 min5 WPM every 2 weeks
Full-time preparation90+ min5 WPM every 10 days

What to Do When You Get Stuck

Most students hit a plateau around 40-45 WPM. When this happens, go back 5 WPM for three days, clean your outlines, then push again.

  • Relax your grip and check posture.
  • Drill your 10 most common mistakes.
  • Take dictation slightly below target speed for accuracy.
  • Get feedback on your written shorthand if possible.
