Weekly full dictation and transcription practice.

80 WPM is the qualifying shorthand speed for SSC Steno Grade D. Many students spend months trying to reach it because they do not follow a structured speed plan.

This 30-day plan is for students who already have solid Pitman theory and can currently write around 55-65 WPM. If you are below that level, first spend a few weeks on foundation and Volume 1 practice.

Before You Start: Check Your Baseline

  • Choose a 200-word passage from Kailash Chandra Volume 2.
  • Take 3 minutes of dictation without stopping.
  • Count only readable correct words.
  • Divide by 3 to get your current WPM.
  • Repeat the same test on Day 10, Day 20 and Day 30.

Days 1-10: Speed Conditioning

The first block pushes your hand above comfort speed. Start at your current comfortable WPM, then move 5 WPM higher. You will miss outlines, and that is expected.

  • Day 1: warm-up at current speed and phrase review.
  • Day 2-3: dictation 5 WPM above comfort speed and weak outline drill.
  • Day 4-5: new passages with phrase focus.
  • Day 6: first attempt near 70 WPM.
  • Day 7: rest and review.
  • Day 8-9: two-speed sessions and transcription practice.
  • Day 10: repeat baseline speed test.

Days 11-20: Accuracy Building

Speed without accuracy fails the exam. The second block keeps you around 70-75 WPM while improving transcription quality.

  • Day 11-12: same passage at 70 WPM with transcription comparison.
  • Day 13: delayed transcription after 30 minutes.
  • Day 14: personal error list drill.
  • Day 15: tick the, hook a/an and phrase focus.
  • Day 16: full 10-minute mock at 70 WPM.
  • Day 17: posture and outline review.
  • Day 18-19: first 75 WPM attempts.
  • Day 20: baseline speed test again.

Days 21-30: Exam Simulation

The final block introduces 78-80 WPM practice and full exam-style mock tests. The goal is not perfection on the first attempt. The goal is to keep writing, recover from missed outlines and transcribe accurately.

  • Day 21-22: 76-78 WPM fresh dictation.
  • Day 23: full 10-minute mock at 75 WPM.
  • Day 24: weak outline and administrative phrase drill.
  • Day 25: first 80 WPM attempt.
  • Day 26: repeat at 78 WPM for confidence.
  • Day 27: second 80 WPM attempt.
  • Day 28: mock at 78 WPM.
  • Day 29: full 80 WPM rehearsal.
  • Day 30: final 3-minute assessment.

After Day 30

If you are at 78-80 WPM with under 7 percent error, you are close to SSC Grade D skill-test readiness. If you are at 72-77 WPM, repeat Days 21-30 for two more weeks.

If the exam is within 30 days, stop pushing new speed aggressively and focus on maintaining 80 WPM, mock tests and transcription accuracy.

What If You Do Not Have a Dictation Partner?

Record yourself reading passages at target WPM, or use calibrated dictation audio. The hardest part of this plan is getting daily audio at 65, 70, 75, 78 and 80 WPM.

A guided batch solves this because the dictation speed can be matched to your current level and increased at the right time.
