Match the SSC skill test dictation length.
Whether you are at 30 WPM or 60 WPM, shorthand speed grows through the same principles: consistent dictation, clean outlines, timed practice, and honest error review.
These tips come from practical coaching experience with students preparing for SSC Steno, court steno, typing tests, and other shorthand-based exams.
Practice Slightly Above Your Comfort Zone
If you practice only at comfortable speed, your speed stays the same. Take dictation 5 to 10 WPM above your stable speed. You will miss some outlines, but that pressure builds growth.
Fix a 30-Minute Daily Minimum
Shorthand is a motor skill. It needs repetition. Thirty minutes daily is better than three hours once a week because your hand and ear need regular conditioning.

Stop guessing your speed-building plan. Start with the same structured shorthand coaching system students use to qualify selection rounds.
Start on WhatsAppSeparate Theory from Speed Practice
Use the first 10 minutes for theory or outline correction. Then use the next 20 minutes for speed dictation. Mixing both creates confusion.
Always Read Back What You Write
After dictation, read your shorthand aloud immediately. If you cannot read it, your outlines are not exam-ready. Reading back is also the foundation of transcription accuracy.
Use a Stopwatch and Track WPM
Never guess your speed. Count words, time the passage, calculate WPM, and record progress every week. Tracking removes confusion and keeps motivation real.
Focus on High-Frequency Words
Words like the, and, that, this, which, from, for, of, in and on appear repeatedly. Make these outlines automatic. Fast common words save time in every dictation.
Do Full 10-Minute Mock Dictations
The SSC Steno skill test is a 10-minute dictation. Your hand must be trained for that duration. Once a week, take a full mock without pausing.
Sample 30-Minute Routine
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 0-5 min | Review yesterday errors and rewrite correct outlines |
| 5-15 min | Theory, phrasing or high-frequency word practice |
| 15-28 min | Speed dictation at target WPM |
| 28-30 min | Read back and mark errors |
